MEET THE ARTIST BEHIND OUR ARTWORK

SHANE COOK – AKA KOOKA

Shane Mankitya Cook also known as Kooka is a proud Wulli Wulli and Guwa (Koa) descendant from Queensland.

He has also been adopted by the Kaurna Aboriginal community in Adelaide and given the language name which translates to “the scarred one”

Shane is internationally and nationally recognised as a prominent Australian Aboriginal aerosol artist, youth and cultural mentor, currently working in youth justice and education.  His style is a mixture of graffiti street style art blended with Indigenous inspired contemporary and traditional First Nations Australian art taught to him by his mother as a child.

Since high school Shane has been an advocate for personal growth, practising culture through art and dance. He also played a key role in facilitating workshops in schools, the youth justice system and community-based events throughout the country.  In 2019, Shane participated in the Indigenous Marathon Project where he completed the New York City Marathon making him the 89th graduate.  Since then, Shane has started studying Bachelor of Arts Psychotherapy in the hope of helping other Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander youth use art to improve their lives.

His artwork has been featured on sporting team jerseys and sporting gear including the 2018 Adelaide Crows FC Indigenous Round Boots, the NBL Adelaide ‘36ers’ Indigenous round jersey and the Adelaide Netball Thunderbirds Indigenous round sporting outfit.  Most recently, his community work has been recognised by the 2020 7News Department of Human Services Aboriginal Achievement Award and was nominated as the Young South Australian of the Year.

It is a privilege to have Shane’s artwork be the official De Castella Run art for the 2021 event.  It is wonderful to celebrate the achievements of those supported by our charity partner, the Indigenous Marathon Foundation.
